Torus and Waterford School Honored by Utah Clean Energy for the Murray Science Center Project

Torus and Waterford School were recognized by Utah Clean Energy and the Utah Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) Utah Chapter for outstanding achievement in sustainable energy innovation.

“Waterford School’s leadership and commitment to sustainability set an example for institutions everywhere.” — Nate Walkingshaw, CEO and Co-founder at Torus

The award honors the Murray Science Center at Waterford School — a landmark project that brings together sustainable infrastructure, STEM education, and grid innovation. Completed in August 2023, the facility features what we believe to be the first commercially approved flywheel energy storage system at a school in the United States.

The Torus hybrid system combines flywheel and battery energy storage, installed directly adjacent to Waterford’s physics lab. The system provides real-time harmonic smoothing for the school’s geothermal variable frequency drive (VFD) system and offers grid-event participation capability, enabling students to study, in real time, how energy moves through modern power systems.

By integrating advanced energy storage into our geothermal HVAC system, the school gives students a rare opportunity to observe, analyze, and interact with the very systems that will define the future of clean energy.” — Andrew Menke, Head of School at Waterford.

“We’re very excited for students at Waterford to get the chance to see how the electricity they use is generated, stored and shared,” said Nate Walkingshaw, CEO and Co-founder of Torus. “Waterford School’s leadership and commitment to sustainability set an example for institutions everywhere.”

“Located outside the Murray Science Center, the Torus Energy System is more than a technological milestone—it’s a teaching tool,” said Andrew Menke, Head of School at Waterford. “By integrating advanced energy storage into our geothermal HVAC system, the school gives students a rare opportunity to observe, analyze, and interact with the very systems that will define the future of clean energy.”

By making advanced energy technology part of the curriculum, Waterford students are gaining hands-on experience with the systems shaping our energy future.

The recognition was presented on October 21, 2025, during the Utah AEE Symposium hosted by Utah Clean Energy at Waterford School’s Murray Science Center.
