Cicero MGT Releases Independent Report on Torus Technology

Analysis from Cicero MGT highlights how Torus modular power plants deliver speed, resilience, and security to modernize America’s grid.

SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (Sept. 22, 2025)

Cicero MGT, an independent research and advisory firm, has published a 122-page report analyzing Torus modular power plants and their role in modernizing America’s power infrastructure.

For more than two decades, Cicero has advised organizations navigating disruption in critical industries. Now as part of MGT, the firm brings more than 50 years of combined research and advisory experience with over 30,000 client engagements worldwide. This new study reflects Cicero MGT’s independent assessment of the U.S. grid, its challenges, and the role Torus can play in strengthening resilience, affordability, and security.

The report highlights the urgent state of U.S. energy infrastructure. With electricity demand rising from AI, data centers, and electrification, the grid faces mounting reliability and cybersecurity risks. Power quality disruptions already cost the U.S. economy hundreds of billions of dollars  annually, and new peak loads are projected to grow by more than 150 gigawatts this decade.

This study from Cicero MGT gives people a clear, independent view of what Torus is building and why it matters,” — Nate Walkingshaw, CEO and co-founder of Torus

Key findings from the Cicero report include:

  • Grid Reliability
Inertia delivered by flywheels provides real-time grid stabilization as demand for energy grows. Torus has partnered with PacifiCorp on more than 500 MW of demand-response capacity, one of the largest inertial storage commitments ever made with a regulated U.S. utility.
  • Technology Integration
Torus’ hybrid system combines the power and durability of flywheels with the long-duration capacity of batteries, delivering energy in milliseconds while extending battery life.
  • Deployment Models
Modular power plants can be deployed in months rather than years within sub-transmission and distribution, providing faster relief than large-scale main transmission projects.
  • Energy Security
Domestic manufacturing, a U.S.-based supply chain, and integrated cybersecurity across hardware and software address both resilience and national security concerns.
  • Customer Impact
Torus systems significantly cut energy costs while providing four hours of seamless backup power. By smoothing large motors and preventing costly production interruptions, the system delivered significant operational savings and improved resilience beyond what traditional batteries or generators could offer. The report covers our work with utilities and with customers across many different industries, including data centers, airports, manufacturers, resorts, and schools.

We live at the intersection of innovation and impact — helping leaders drive measurable change and adapt with confidence to the rapid shifts in technology and society,” — Michael Jenson, Principal, AI Practice Lead at Cicero MGT.

“This study from Cicero MGT gives people a clear, independent view of what Torus is building and why it matters,” said Nate Walkingshaw, CEO and co-founder of Torus. “The challenges facing the grid are real, and we need solutions that can be deployed quickly, run reliably, and last. Our modular power plants do exactly that, delivering the inertia the grid needs to stay steady and protecting the sensitive equipment our customers rely on every day.”
